On June 28, 2023, the ACLU of Kansas sent a letter to school districts across the state sharing information with them about their continued obligations to protect LGBTQ+ students and employees in their schools, despite the anti-trans bills that the Kansas Legislature passed this year.
In anticipation of schools and school districts receiving recommendations or any potential discussions regarding SB 180, we sent this advisory letter clarifying that SB 180 does not affirmatively require districts to change current policies, nor does it relieve Kansas school districts of their obligations under the U.S. Constitution and federal statute to protect LGBTQ+ students and employees.
