The ACLU of Kansas has sent a letter to North Lyon County School District (USD 251) urging them to create policies and procedures protecting LGBTQ+ rights. On July 30, 2021, we sent a letter acknowledging their commitment to creating these policies.
This comes after an independant investigation and appeal found that two school employees sexually harassed middle-school student Izzy Dieker, 14, when they punished her for saying, "I'm a lesbian."
Izzy was initally suspending for swearing, but when video of the incident confirmed she never swore, just simply said that she was a lesbian, her suspension remained because that was seen as inappropriate language.
The commitment letter below acknowledges and outlines the district's plan.
