On August 19, 2024, the ACLU of Kansas sent a letter notifying a principal at USD 109 in Belleville that her actions facilitating the visit of an individual with Gideons International, who interacted with students to advocate his religious viewpoints, was unconstitutional. This action violates the First Amendment, which “mandates governmental neutrality between religions and between religion and nonreligion.” We wrote this letter to remind school officials of their Constitutional obligations, which prohibit them from promoting religious viewpoints within their capacity as school employees.
